The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has called for calm as investigations into the disappearance of 31-year-old fisherman Brian Odhiambo continue. Odhiambo was last seen on January 18, 2025, allegedly in the custody of KWS officers, leading to protests across Nakuru County.
Tensions escalated on Thursday as residents clashed with security forces in Nakuru Town East. Protesters blocked roads leading to Lake Nakuru National Park with bonfires and stones, and parts of the park were set on fire. Teargas used to disperse the demonstrators affected several students from Kimathi Secondary School, resulting in hospitalizations.
“Tuko na mtoto ameshtuka, analia. Teargas amenyongwa na hiyo teargas,” lamented one distressed parent, reflecting the anguish within the community.
Residents have accused KWS of complicity in Odhiambo’s disappearance and are demanding the return of his body to the family. Authorities, however, claim Odhiambo escaped into the forest after requesting his hands be freed—a narrative widely rejected by locals.
In a statement, KWS reassured the public of its commitment to a transparent investigation. “The alleged disappearance of Mr. Brian Odhiambo, a 31-year-old man reported missing on January 18, 2025, after an encounter with KWS officers, is under thorough investigation by the DCI. We recognize the sensitivity of this matter and are engaging with affected families, community representatives, and stakeholders to foster understanding and promote collaboration,” KWS stated.
The Service also emphasized ecological challenges at Lake Nakuru National Park, citing an increase in illegal fishing driven by rising water levels. KWS highlighted public health concerns, referencing a 2022 Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) report that found harmful heavy metals in the lake’s fish, deeming them unfit for human consumption.
“This emphasizes the critical need to address illegal fishing for public health and environmental conservation,” the statement read.
Amid the unrest, KWS urged the public to avoid further destruction of property and to support ongoing investigations. “Protecting human life and conserving Kenya’s biodiversity are at the core of our mandate,” KWS asserted, calling for cooperation to resolve the matter peacefully.
As tensions persist, the community and authorities face the dual challenge of addressing the disappearance of Brian Odhiambo and safeguarding the delicate ecosystem of Lake Nakuru National Park.
