The Lango sub-region of Northern Uganda, His Highness the Won Nyaci of Lango, Mzee Yocam Odur Ebii, has officially endorsed Ambassador Dickson Ogwang Okul as the successor to the esteemed title of Won Nyaci of Lango. This significant announcement was made during a private ceremony held at the Teboke Palace in Apac District, a key location in the heart of the Lango cultural domain.
The transition of leadership was witnessed by a distinguished group of individuals, including the Senior Advisor to His Highness, Frederick Ogwal Oyee, the Awitong of the prominent Inomo Clan, Dr. Laury Lawrence Ocen, and Awitong Anthony Olobo, the son of His Highness. Also present were Millie Odur, daughter and caretaker of His Highness Yocam Odur, and other notable figures within the Lango community. The endorsement marks a pivotal moment for the region as it prepares for a new chapter in its cultural history.
Ambassador Dickson Ogwang Okul, who had previously been hesitant to pursue the role despite encouragement from other Lango elders, has accepted the challenge with humility and gratitude. The private meeting underscored the strong support and trust that His Highness has placed in Ogwang Okul to carry forward the Lango cultural legacy. His Highness tasked his son, Awitong Anthony Olobo, with ensuring that Ambassador Ogwang Okul receives the necessary support during this transition period. Ogwang Okul’s acceptance of the role comes with a solemn promise to uphold the values and traditions of the Lango people.
As part of his commitment to the role, Ambassador Ogwang Okul has pledged to follow all legal procedures to ensure a smooth and lawful transition. He has also made a notable promise to convert the Teboke-based palace into a museum dedicated to preserving and celebrating Lango cultural heritage. This initiative aims to safeguard the rich history and traditions of the Lango people and provide a cultural touchstone for future generations.
The Lango sub-region, which is divided into nine districts Alebtong, Amolatar, Apac, Dokolo, Kole, Lira, Oyam, Otuke, and Kwania is a diverse and increasingly urbanized area. With Lira and Apac emerging as significant urban centers, the region has seen notable advancements in manufacturing, trade, and services. The establishment of a cultural museum at Teboke Palace is expected to further enrich the cultural fabric of the Lango sub-region and attract both local and international interest.
Ambassador Ogwang Okul’s appointment is anticipated to bring a renewed focus on the cultural and historical significance of the Lango people. By integrating the palace into a museum, Ogwang Okul aims to create a vibrant cultural hub that will not only honor the traditions of the past but also educate and inspire future generations. This strategic move aligns with a broader vision of promoting cultural heritage and fostering community pride within the Lango sub-region.
As the region looks ahead to November 2024, when Ambassador Ogwang Okul is set to officially assume the role of Won Nyaci, there is palpable excitement and anticipation within the community. The transition marks a significant step in the preservation and celebration of Lango culture and heritage. Through this new chapter, the Lango people are poised to continue their rich traditions while embracing a future that honors their past.
