Authorities have successfully obtained a 14-day detention order for 33 men accused of being part of a criminal gang. The prosecution stated that the suspects violated provisions of the Prevention of Organized Crime Act, 2010. They are alleged to have subjected residents of Diani to various forms of violence, prompting law enforcement to take swift action.
An application for their detention was filed on March 25, 2025, requesting time to conduct comprehensive investigations. A magistrate granted the request, ordering that the suspects be held at various police stations across Kwale, Diani, and Msambweni. The case is scheduled for mention on April 8, 2025, when further directions will be given.
This development follows an escalation of criminal activities in the region, prompting law enforcement agencies to intensify operations. The crackdown resulted in the transfer of two senior police officers following attacks by the gang that left residents injured. The officers affected by the transfer include the Msambweni Sub-County Police Commander and the Diani Officer Commanding Station (OCS).
To restore order, the authorities reassigned leadership roles, with a new sub-county commander taking over in Msambweni. The regional police boss also engaged in a series of high-level meetings with both security personnel and local leaders to strengthen efforts against crime.
The situation has prompted an extensive crackdown, combining strict law enforcement with community engagement. In response to the heightened security operations, about 100 young men voluntarily surrendered to authorities, pledging to abandon criminal activities. Local government officials assured support for those who gave up gang life, promising to integrate them into programs aimed at providing stability and employment opportunities.
The rise in gang-related incidents has been attributed to poor parenting and lack of proper guidance for young people. Officials stressed the need for proactive measures to curb the growing crime rate before it spirals out of control. A call for greater parental responsibility was emphasized, with authorities urging families to play a more active role in shaping the behavior of the youth.
The recent wave of violence was triggered by an incident following a burial in the region. A 29-year-old man was stabbed to death, leading to retaliatory attacks. Panga-wielding youth stormed shops in Diani, looting businesses and injuring unsuspecting residents. This act of lawlessness led to an immediate response from security forces, who deployed additional personnel to restore calm in the area.
Efforts are now focused on dismantling organized criminal groups and ensuring long-term safety for the residents. With increased police presence and coordinated community initiatives, authorities are determined to bring stability to the affected areas.
