A tragic incident unfolded in Baringo County, where a 28-year-old woman allegedly took the life of her child following a dispute with her husband. The incident reportedly occurred on the night of March 4 at their home in Turukwei village within Baringo Central subcounty.
The accused, Viola Kangogo, was presented before a court, where the prosecution sought to charge her with infanticide. During the proceedings, a psychiatric evaluation conducted by a medical professional determined that she was of unsound mind at the time of her arraignment. Given the inconclusive nature of the assessment, the court ordered a second mental evaluation to be conducted. In the meantime, the suspect is to be held at Eldoret Women GK Prison.
According to statements provided to law enforcement, Kangogo’s husband, Ronald Yator, recounted that their family had been living peacefully until the events leading to the tragedy. He stated that on March 3, an argument ensued between them after Kangogo accused him of engaging in extramarital affairs. The heated exchange allegedly led to Kangogo making threats against both her husband and their child.
Yator further detailed an alarming incident that occurred on the same day, where Kangogo attempted to strangle their child using a scarf. He intervened just in time to save the infant. However, the following day, at approximately 8 p.m., Kangogo left their home and later returned in an intoxicated state. Upon arrival, she found her husband and the child still awake. When asked to breastfeed the baby, she instead lifted the infant and forcefully struck the child’s head against a stone, resulting in instant death.
Overcome with grief and realization of her actions, Kangogo allegedly attempted to take her own life. However, her husband managed to restrain her before she could inflict harm on herself.
The case is scheduled for mention on April 4 as authorities await the results of the second mental health assessment. Investigations continue as the court determines the next course of action.
