The last known movements of British businessman Campbell Scott, who was found dead in a Makueni forest, have become central to a murder investigation by Kenyan detectives. Scott, 58, a senior director at data analytics company Fico, went missing on February 17, 2025, while in Nairobi for a three-day workshop. His body was discovered stuffed in a sack in Makongo Forest on February 22.
Scott arrived in Nairobi on Sunday, February 16, accompanied by a colleague. He was set to attend a workshop at the JW Marriot Hotel.
On the morning of February 17, Scott was last seen leaving the hotel at 11:15 a.m. CCTV footage captured him dressed in cargo pants and a blue shirt, exiting the premises with a man wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans. He was later dropped off at Pipeline Embakasi by a taxi driver, after which he was not seen again.
When Scott failed to return, a missing person report was filed at Parklands Police Station. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and Interpol were soon involved in tracing his whereabouts. His call records were retrieved to establish who he was in contact with before his disappearance.
On Saturday, February 22, around 2 p.m., a local herder, Brian Muuo, stumbled upon a green sack emitting a foul smell while grazing his cattle in Makongo Forest along the Wote-Machakos road. He immediately alerted area Chief Francis Kanyaa, who confirmed it contained the decomposing body of a man, estimated to be around 50 years old. The body was suspected to have been murdered elsewhere before being dumped at the scene.
The victim’s hands and legs were bound tightly with a green nylon rope, suggesting he was restrained before his death. His body was taken to the Makueni County Referral Hospital, where it remained unidentified for two days.
On Monday, February 24, Scott’s body was positively identified by his friends and colleagues at the mortuary. His attire and physique matched his description.
Detectives arrested two suspects—a waiter from a Westlands club and the taxi driver who last saw Scott. The driver’s vehicle was also impounded. Investigators are now tracking the individuals Scott was last seen with.
A postmortem was scheduled for February 25 to determine the cause of death. While the motive remains unclear, police suspect Scott’s murder may be linked to his business dealings. He was in Nairobi to meet officials from the UK, the US, and African nations regarding new market ventures.
Scott, who had been with Fico since 2014, was based in London at the time of his death. His murder has left unanswered questions, with detectives working to uncover the truth behind his tragic end.
