A witness has revealed in court that Sharon Njeri Mwangi, the late wife of popular entertainer DJ Brownskin, consumed pesticide originally intended to eradicate cockroaches. The disclosure was made during a hearing at the Milimani Magistrate Court, shedding light on the events surrounding her tragic death on July 29, 2022.
According to testimony, Sharon ingested the pesticide that had been kept in the house for dealing with a cockroach infestation. The witness emphasized that it had not been bought with suicidal intentions. She explained that Sharon and her friend had issues with cockroaches in their homes, prompting them to purchase the chemical and store it on top of the fridge, waiting to use it when the children were not around.
It also emerged during the court proceedings that DJ Brownskin, whose real name is Michael Macharia Njiri, and Sharon had been living separately for several months prior to her death. The couple had reportedly separated in December 2021, though DJ Brownskin continued to visit occasionally. The visits, according to testimony, were understood by the family to be an opportunity for him to spend time with their children and possibly reconcile with his wife.
Testimony from the deceased’s sister revealed that despite the couple’s separation, they previously shared a happy relationship. She expressed regret over the actions of DJ Brownskin on the day of the incident, saying he could have done more to save Sharon’s life instead of recording a video of her in distress. She insisted that immediate medical attention might have saved her sister and criticized the delay in seeking help.
Further insight was provided by a second witness, a university student named Emily Akinyi, who was employed as a housemaid by Sharon. She testified that she had started working at the house in June 2022, just weeks before the incident. On the night of July 28, 2022, Akinyi said she was unaware that Sharon and DJ Brownskin were in the house until early the next morning.
At around 5 a.m., Akinyi recounted hearing the couple arguing downstairs. She was then asked by DJ Brownskin to bring a cup of milk to the sitting room. Upon arriving, she saw Sharon writhing in pain on the floor, unable to hold the cup. Akinyi handed the milk to DJ Brownskin, who then attempted to feed it to his wife.
Afterwards, DJ Brownskin called the police and reported that Sharon was attempting to take her own life. The police instructed him to get assistance from neighbors. He then sent Akinyi and the children to call for help. Neighbors responded and helped carry Sharon to the car, rushing her to Metropolitan Hospital in Buruburu.
During cross-examination, Akinyi stated she was new in the household and therefore unaware of any ongoing disputes between the couple. She also said she was not informed about the specific substance Sharon had ingested, only that it was “a lot of medicine.”
Following Sharon’s death, Akinyi and the children were picked up by Sharon’s mother and taken to Kamulu. She noted that there appeared to be no visible conflict between the two families during the burial arrangements. After the burial, Akinyi returned to school and has had no further contact with the family.
The hearing is set to resume on July 23, 2025, with three additional witnesses, including a minor, expected to testify.
