A 38-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a nighttime arson attack at the Pennsylvania governor’s residence while the governor, his family, and guests were sleeping inside. The fire, which broke out around 2 a.m., caused extensive damage to the building. Emergency responders managed to extinguish the flames, but not before a large portion of the residence was left charred, with furniture destroyed and ashes covering the floors.
Governor Josh Shapiro confirmed that he, his wife, their four children, two dogs, and another family staying with them were all safely evacuated. Despite the traumatic event, he emphasized that he would not be deterred from continuing his work, saying that if the attack was intended to intimidate him, it would only make him more determined.
Authorities identified the suspect as Cody Balmer, a resident of Harrisburg. Though charges had not been officially filed at the time of his arrest, officials indicated that Balmer is expected to face serious charges including attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and aggravated assault against an enumerated person. Federal charges are also being considered.
Investigators revealed that Balmer was found with homemade incendiary devices and that he had scaled a fence and forcibly entered the residence before igniting the fire. He remained inside for less than a minute and evaded troopers who were actively searching for him. Authorities described his actions as highly methodical and deliberate, although a specific motive remains unclear.
The incident took place shortly after a Passover dinner hosted by the governor. Remnants of the celebration, including a “Passover Crafts” sign, were visible among the damage. In his response, Shapiro highlighted the symbolism of the attack occurring during a Jewish religious holiday and reaffirmed his pride in his faith. He declared that the attack was not just against his family but against all Pennsylvanians who wish to live and worship freely.
The suspect has a criminal history, including a previous guilty plea in 2016 for forgery and theft by deception, and was scheduled to appear in court soon for a plea hearing related to a 2023 simple assault charge. A review of security procedures at the governor’s residence is now underway, with officials aiming to prevent any future breaches.
The FBI is assisting in the investigation, and officials expressed confidence in law enforcement’s ability to handle the case. The governor praised the swift action of police and first responders, crediting them with saving his family’s lives. He described being woken up by banging on the door as troopers evacuated the home and expressed deep gratitude for their bravery.
