A 49-year-old man has been sentenced to ten years in prison after being found guilty of raping a 23-year-old woman. The sentencing was delivered by a court in Chuka, where the magistrate found sufficient evidence to convict him of the crime.
The man reportedly committed the offence on September 12, 2023, after deceiving the victim with a false promise of employment. He approached the young woman along a road in Mbogori, Chogoria, Tharaka-Nithi County, and assured her that he could offer her a job as a house help.
Believing the promise, the victim accompanied him to his home, where they had a meal. However, after the meal, the man left the house and locked her inside. Later, at midnight, he returned, raped her, and once again locked her inside before leaving.
The following day, on September 13, he returned to the house around 1 p.m. and released the victim. Before letting her go, he handed her a small amount of money and gave her his phone number, instructing her to call him.
As she made her way home, the victim encountered her aunt, who had been searching for her. After listening to her niece’s ordeal, the aunt encouraged her to report the matter to the police. They proceeded to Mbogori Police Post in Chogoria, where the incident was officially reported.
Following the report, authorities launched an investigation, leading to the arrest of the perpetrator. During the trial, the prosecution presented substantial evidence, including testimonies from four witnesses, among them a medical doctor and the investigating officer. Additionally, crucial documents such as a P3 form, Post Rape Care (PRC) form, and treatment notes were submitted as evidence.
Based on the compelling evidence, the court found the accused guilty and sentenced him to ten years in prison. The ruling was seen as a significant step in ensuring justice for the victim and sending a strong message against sexual violence.
The case highlighted the importance of promptly reporting such incidents and seeking medical and legal support. Authorities continue to urge victims of sexual violence to come forward and report crimes so that justice can be served.
