A mother has been sentenced for killing her six-year-old son after claiming to hear “demonic voices.” The tragic incident occurred in the Gendros area of Swansea, where Alexander Zurawski was found dead in his home on 29 August last year. His mother, Karolina Zurawska, 42, was discovered beside him with a handsaw at her side.
Zurawska had earlier pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of her son on the grounds of diminished responsibility. The court accepted the plea following assessments by three psychiatric experts, all of whom concluded that she had been experiencing a severe psychotic episode at the time of the killing.
In addition to the manslaughter charge, she was also sentenced for the attempted murder of her 67-year-old father, Krzysztof Siwi, whom she attacked earlier that same day. The court heard that she had hugged her father and told him she loved him before launching three attacks on him with the intent to kill.
The judge described her behavior as “uncharacteristic,” emphasizing that there had been no indication of such an incident beforehand. He explained that she had been a loving and devoted mother to Alexander, who had been recovering from a brain tumour that left him partially sighted and dependent on a cane to walk.
During sentencing, the judge said that Zurawska was not a wicked mother, but someone who had been suffering from severe mental illness. Her psychotic state had left her unable to comprehend the nature or quality of her actions. The voices she believed she was hearing led her to think she was being instructed by demonic forces.
Given her mental condition, the court imposed an indefinite hospital order. This means that she will be detained in a secure hospital until medical professionals determine it is safe for her to be released. The judge fully supported the psychiatric recommendation, stating that hospital treatment was the most appropriate course of action.
In his remarks, the judge also paid tribute to Alexander, remembering him as a brave and kind young boy. Despite his medical challenges, he had been a bright and mature child who brought love and joy to those around him.
Alexander’s family described him as a gentle and well-behaved boy who had a remarkable sense of maturity for his age. Their statement reflected deep sorrow and admiration for a child who had already faced so much adversity in his short life, yet remained loving and kind-hearted throughout.
The case has highlighted the devastating consequences of untreated or undetected mental health conditions. Though Zurawska had no prior history of violence or psychiatric hospitalization, the episode she suffered from was so severe that it entirely altered her sense of reality and understanding.
Mental health professionals and advocates have reiterated the importance of early intervention and support for individuals showing signs of psychological distress. This tragic case serves as a stark reminder of how critical mental health services are not only for those who are suffering but also for the safety of the people around them.
As the community continues to grieve the loss of young Alexander, his memory remains in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His courage in the face of illness and the love he shared with his family will not be forgotten.
