A Georgia mother has filed a lawsuit against a daycare center after her then-9-month-old son suffered severe burns from being placed in scalding water for several minutes. The incident occurred in 2022 when she left her infant in the care of Young Mindz Learning Academy in Decatur, Georgia.
Surveillance footage from the daycare reportedly captured an employee aggressively handling the infant, placing him on a changing table, and removing his clothes. Moments later, the worker placed the baby in a sink filled with hot water, leaving him there for several minutes. After finally removing him, the employee allegedly failed to recognize that he had been burned and left him unattended for approximately 15 minutes while walking around the facility.
According to the lawsuit, daycare employees were not authorized to bathe children in their care and were only permitted to use wet wipes for cleaning. The employee in question allegedly ignored this policy, resulting in the baby sustaining serious injuries. The infant endured a painful recovery process that lasted several months, experiencing extreme discomfort even while urinating. His mother described the distress of witnessing his suffering, including the necessity of having his blisters popped during treatment, which no pain medication could fully alleviate.
The lawsuit also highlights additional policy violations by the facility. One of these involved improper supervision, as children were supposed to be separated by age groups. Footage from the incident reportedly showed another young child left to watch over the injured infant while the employee was in another area of the daycare.
Legal representatives for the family described the situation as a failure on multiple levels, citing neglect, lack of proper supervision, and violations of daycare policies. The daycare worker involved in the incident was arrested and charged with cruelty to children. Ultimately, the worker received a sentence of probation.
Following the incident, the daycare center implemented corrective measures in response to concerns raised by state inspectors. Reports indicate that the facility has since addressed the issues related to the case and remains in good standing. However, the lawsuit seeks accountability for the harm suffered by the child and the emotional distress experienced by his family.
