A suspect wanted in connection with the murder of British businessman Campbell Scott has died by suicide while on the run, police have confirmed.
Samuel Musembi, who was alleged to have driven the vehicle that transported Scott’s body from Pipeline, Nairobi, to Makongo Forest in Makueni County, was found dead in a house in Dandora, Nairobi. According to authorities, Musembi had been hiding at a relative’s home before seeking temporary accommodation at a friend’s residence.
The friend, who remains unidentified, reported that Musembi appeared restless and requested a place to rest away from his usual surroundings. On Tuesday morning, the friend left for work, leaving Musembi alone. However, upon returning in the evening, he found the door locked from inside. After forcibly gaining entry, he discovered Musembi lying on the bed with foam coming from his mouth and nose, and blood oozing from a stab wound on his neck.
Musembi was immediately rushed to Mama Lucy Hospital, but the facility declined to admit him, citing the severity of the case. He was later transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning while receiving treatment.
Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin stated that while preliminary findings suggest suicide, an autopsy will confirm the exact cause of death. Investigators believe Musembi initially consumed a poisonous substance, and when it failed to take effect, he stabbed himself.
Musembi had been among three suspects being pursued by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in connection to Scott’s murder. The Briton’s partially decomposed body was discovered on February 22, 2025, in Makongo Forest. Reports indicate that Scott, who had arrived in Kenya for a business conference, was lured into a meeting, abducted, and later murdered.
Two other suspects, Alex Mutua Kithuka and Albunus Mutinda Nzioki, are currently in custody assisting with investigations. Police allege the pair attempted to withdraw money using Scott’s credit cards in multiple locations. Another suspect, Benard Mbunga Mbusu, remains at large.
Authorities continue their investigations, including tracing the host who sheltered Musembi before his death
