The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has suspended the operating license of Super Metro Limited, citing non-compliance with road safety regulations. The suspension, which takes effect from March 20, 2025, aims to ensure that the public service vehicle (PSV) company adheres to safety standards before resuming operations.
In a statement, NTSA emphasized that the decision was made to protect passengers and other road users.
“This is to notify the public that the Authority has suspended Super Metro Limited’s operator license until the Company fully complies with the Public Service Vehicles Regulations, 2014, and other set conditions,” NTSA stated.
The authority detailed several violations by the matatu company, including expired inspection certificates, road service licenses, and speed limiter certificates. Additionally, some vehicles lacked proper speed limiter records and vendor details. NTSA also highlighted concerns over driver qualifications, stating that some drivers did not meet the required credentials to operate public transport vehicles.
To have its license reinstated, Super Metro must comply with several conditions. The company is required to present 294 vehicles with violations to respective speed limiter vendors for compliance checks. These vehicles must then undergo inspection at the Likoni Motor Vehicle Inspection Centre, where they must obtain compliance reports.
Furthermore, 42 out of 109 drivers with speed violations must retake tests at the Likoni Driver Test Centre. NTSA revealed that 64 of the company’s drivers had already failed a retest on March 10, 2025, leading to the suspension of their respective driving licenses.
In addition, NTSA has directed Super Metro to disengage all unqualified drivers and submit signed contracts for its drivers and other staff. The company must also conduct a mandatory road safety sensitization program for all its drivers. The session must be facilitated by NTSA officers, and Super Metro is required to submit a detailed report, including attendance records, photos, and meeting minutes.
“The Authority shall conduct a Compliance Audit on the Company,” NTSA added, reaffirming its commitment to road safety enforcement.
Super Metro, a popular PSV company, now faces a challenging task to meet these stringent conditions before it can resume operations. Commuters who rely on the company’s services will likely experience disruptions until compliance is achieved.
