Online activist James Musa Awandu, also known as Jem Guru or Jumuiyan, was found dead in his house in Ngong, Kajiado County, in what is suspected to be a case of suicide. Reports indicate that he left a suicide note before his death.
Awandu, aged 31, was discovered unresponsive in his home on March 26 after allegedly ingesting poison. It is said that around 10 p.m., he called the caretaker of his apartment seeking help. The caretaker quickly mobilized assistance and rushed him to a hospital in Kiserian, but he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body was later transferred to a mortuary, where an autopsy was scheduled.
Authorities who visited the scene found containers believed to have contained poison. A suicide note was also discovered on a table inside the house. Investigators are analyzing the note to confirm its authenticity and determine whether Awandu was indeed the author. However, officials have refrained from disclosing the contents of the note as the investigation continues.
Friends of the deceased gathered at the mortuary on Thursday to confirm his passing, while his family in Kilifi County was left in shock. They have since requested financial support to cover funeral expenses.
Awandu was a well-known figure in the online community, celebrated for his activism against poor governance. He was regarded as a fearless advocate who used sharp insights and humor to address pressing social and political issues. Many of his followers referred to him as “captain” due to his impactful approach to activism.
Meanwhile, four other cases of suicide were reported in different locations on Thursday.
In Huruma, a 47-year-old man was found dead after allegedly hanging himself with a belt tied around the door grill of his house. According to family members, he had a domestic dispute with his wife the previous evening, prompting her to leave and seek refuge at her sister’s home. His body, which showed no visible injuries, was taken to a mortuary for autopsy.
In Mwea West, Kirinyaga County, a 41-year-old man was found hanging from a roof rafter inside his house. No suicide note was recovered at the scene.
In Kipkaren, Nandi County, a 24-year-old man was discovered dead, also having hanged himself using a belt tied to a roof rafter. Similarly, in Nyamira County, a 31-year-old man was found in his room, having taken his own life using a sisal rope.
Authorities confirmed that all the bodies had been moved to mortuaries pending further investigation and autopsies.
Suicide cases have been on the rise, prompting increasing concern from both the public and the government. Calls for action have grown louder, with various measures being considered to curb the alarming trend. Mental health experts continue to advocate for better support systems, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness, providing counseling services, and encouraging open conversations around mental well-being.
