A prime suspect in the murder of British national Campbell Scott was arrested in Mombasa on Sunday, March 2, after weeks of evading authorities. The suspect had been hiding in the coastal town since Scott’s murder on February 18.
Police swiftly transported the suspect to Nairobi, where they planned to present him in court for a miscellaneous application to detain him as investigations continue. Authorities also revealed that at least two accomplices are still at large and are believed to be hiding in either Nairobi or Mombasa.
Homicide detectives described the arrest as a major breakthrough in their probe. However, the motive behind the murder remains undisclosed. The Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mohamed Amin, confirmed the arrest, stating, “We have a prime suspect in the murder of Scott. The hunt for more suspects is ongoing. We hope to get more suspects involved in this callous murder.”
Earlier, police had arrested a taxi driver and a waiter in connection with the case. However, investigators later determined they were innocent and will instead serve as witnesses.
An autopsy conducted on Scott’s body at a mortuary in Makueni last Thursday proved inconclusive. Pathologists found soft tissue injuries, but they were deemed too minor to be the cause of death. As a result, forensic experts collected samples for further tests at the government chemist. The autopsy was conducted by Government Pathologist Dr. Richard Njoroge, with Scott’s family in attendance.
Investigators suspect that Scott’s killers were after his money. Reports indicate that he was held captive for several days in a house in Nairobi’s Pipeline area before being killed. His body was then transported and dumped in Makongo forest, where it was discovered on February 22. Authorities believe the suspects may have accessed Scott’s bank accounts before or after his murder.
Scott was last seen alive at his hotel in Nairobi on February 17. His body was found on February 24 at the Makueni County Referral Hospital, where it had been lying unclaimed for two days.
With the arrest of the prime suspect, detectives remain focused on apprehending the remaining accomplices and uncovering the full circumstances surrounding Scott’s tragic death.
