A major security operation is underway in Baringo County following the fatal shooting of a local chief in Chipilat, Tiaty Constituency. The chief was leading a mission to recover stolen livestock when he was ambushed by armed bandits. His body was discovered early Friday morning and later moved to a local mortuary.
The gunmen escaped with an unknown number of animals after the attack, according to local officials and witnesses. This incident marks the second killing in the area within a week, highlighting the persistent threat posed by banditry despite ongoing security efforts.
Authorities responded swiftly, deploying additional personnel, including special forces, to track down the assailants. Security teams have been mobilized as part of the ongoing Operation Maliza Uhalifu North Rift, which was launched to curb banditry, cattle rustling, and insecurity in the region.
The operation, which began in February 2023, has targeted violence and criminal activities in nine counties: Baringo, Turkana, Samburu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Marsabit, Laikipia, Isiolo, and Meru. Security forces, comprising both the National Police Service (NPS) and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), have been working together to restore peace in these areas, many of which have been designated as “Disturbed” and “Dangerous.”
Despite significant progress in reducing banditry, armed groups continue to stage attacks. Authorities reported a 62% reduction in cattle rustling incidents, with stolen livestock numbers dropping from 63,054 to 23,668 a decline of 39,386 animals. Additionally, 172 illegal firearms were recovered through mop-up exercises, and 10,173 livestock were retrieved.
The operation has also resulted in the arrest and prosecution of 250 individuals, including 14 political figures suspected of involvement in criminal activities. Security agencies remain vigilant as they pursue the criminals responsible for the latest attack, aiming to bring stability to the affected communities.
While authorities acknowledge that progress has been made, the killing of the chief underscores the ongoing challenges in eliminating banditry completely. The recent ambush has prompted renewed efforts to enhance security operations and prevent further attacks. Security forces are working closely with local communities to gather intelligence and strengthen their response to such threats.
Residents in the region remain on high alert as security teams intensify patrols and pursue the attackers. The government has reiterated its commitment to eradicating banditry and ensuring the safety of those living in affected areas.
