A Texas man who was 16 when he fatally shot a 62-year-old grandmother as she walked from a parking lot to her gym will spend the rest of his life in prison. Now 20, he was sentenced after pleading guilty to murder, avoiding the death penalty but still facing a minimum of 30 years before being eligible for parole.
The crime occurred in the early morning hours of June 17, 2021. The victim had just parked her vehicle outside her gym when an SUV carrying the assailant and four other teenagers approached. As she walked toward the entrance, two of the teens exited the vehicle and called out to her. Sensing danger, she attempted to flee toward the gym. A shot rang out, striking her. She collapsed near the entrance, where she died. The attackers immediately fled the scene.
Surveillance footage of the incident was released, aiding investigators in their search for those responsible. Authorities swiftly identified and arrested the shooter just days later. He had reportedly bragged about his crimes to a girl on social media, even sharing a picture of a bus ticket he had purchased to flee to Mexico. His plan was to “stay low” and evade capture, but officers intercepted him at a local bus station before he could leave the city.
Investigators later discovered that the group had attempted another crime just an hour before the fatal shooting. They had tried to steal a woman’s car, but the plan failed when they realized the vehicle was inoperable.
