A 35-year-old woman has been arrested in Moyale for alleged involvement in trafficking bhang (cannabis). The arrest was carried out by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) following intelligence reports that led them to her home in Antut village. Amina Mala Gure, the woman in question, had been under suspicion for some time due to her suspected connections to the illegal drug trade.
Upon conducting a search of Gure’s residence, law enforcement officers discovered a significant amount of bhang hidden in various locations. In total, 27 tightly wrapped bales of cannabis sativa, concealed in sacks and a metallic box, were recovered. The seized cannabis weighed approximately 137.8 kilograms, with an estimated street value of Ksh4.13 million. The discovery of this large quantity of illegal drugs came as part of a focused operation aimed at tackling drug trafficking in the region.
Gure’s arrest is part of a larger crackdown on the drug trafficking networks operating in various parts of the country. The DCI described her as a “notorious trafficker” who had been on their radar for a while. After the discovery of the drugs, she was taken into custody and escorted to the Moyale Police Station for further processing. Authorities are now preparing to file charges against her as they move forward with legal proceedings.
This arrest follows a series of similar operations aimed at disrupting the flow of illegal drugs across major transport corridors in Kenya. Just the day before Gure’s arrest, on April 15, 2025, police in Migori arrested a 26-year-old man, Bernard Kungu, who was caught attempting to smuggle 152 rolls of bhang. Kungu had been trying to board a bus to Mombasa, but officers were tipped off and intercepted him at the Tahmeed bus booking office. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the illicit drugs were hidden inside bulky bags that Kungu was carrying.
Kungu, who was also arrested and taken to the police station for questioning, claimed that he was transporting the drugs to Mombasa. This incident is part of an ongoing initiative by law enforcement agencies to target and dismantle drug trafficking operations across the country.
In another operation, conducted on April 11, 2025, authorities seized a large shipment of cannabis sativa along the Moyale-Isiolo Highway. During this operation, a multi-agency team stopped a Mercedes-Benz Actros truck driven by 33-year-old Boniface Nthenge Kithuku. Inside the truck, officers discovered gunny bags containing tightly packed bales of cannabis. The drugs had been cleverly concealed within the truck’s chassis, indicating a well-organized attempt to smuggle the illicit substance.
The DCI has made it clear that it will continue to intensify its efforts to combat drug trafficking networks operating throughout the country. The police have expressed their determination to disrupt these operations and bring those involved in the illegal trade to justice. Such operations are seen as crucial in preventing the spread of narcotics and addressing the negative impact drug trafficking has on local communities.
As Gure awaits her arraignment in court, law enforcement remains vigilant, focused on cracking down on the trafficking of illegal drugs. The recent string of arrests is a testament to the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations and the authorities’ commitment to safeguarding public health and safety.
