Kenyan marathon runner Lawrence Cherono has been handed a seven-year ban for violating doping regulations, according to the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU). The AIU, in a statement released Wednesday, confirmed the ban, detailing Cherono’s breach of doping rules. “The AIU has banned Lawrence Cherono (Kenya) for 7 years from 16 July, 2022 for presence/use of a prohibited substance (trimetazidine), tampering or attempted tampering with any part of doping control,” the statement read.
Trimetazidine, a drug that enhances blood flow to the heart and reduces chest pain, is classified as a metabolic modulator and is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) because of its potential to enhance athletic performance.
