The National Police Service (NPS) of Kenya has undergone a significant leadership transition with the appointment of Douglas Kanja Kirocho as the Acting Inspector General, succeeding Japhet Koome who resigned recently.
According to Dr. Resila Onyango, the spokesperson for the National Police Service, a brief ceremony was held at the NPS Headquarters to mark the transition. Former IG Japhet Koome expressed gratitude to the officers for their support during his tenure. He emphasized the importance of unity and patriotism, stating, “Kenya is a beautiful country and bigger than all of us.”
In turn, Acting IG Douglas Kanja acknowledged Koome’s strategic leadership and expressed appreciation for his guidance. He affirmed his commitment to continuing the mission of the NPS with dedication and professionalism.
Following the changes, Douglas Kanja, who previously served as the deputy to Koome, assumes the role of Acting IG. He will be supported by Eliud Lagat, appointed as the Acting Deputy Inspector General from the Kenya Police Service, and James Kamau, appointed in an acting capacity from the National Police College Embakasi “A” Campus.
Public and Parliamentary Scrutiny
Prior to Koome’s resignation, there had been calls from various quarters, including Members of Parliament, for his removal. Criticisms centered on his handling of recent anti-tax protests that resulted in the tragic deaths of several demonstrators. The change in leadership comes amidst public scrutiny and calls for accountability within the NPS.
Dr. Onyango reaffirmed the NPS’s commitment to professionalism and adherence to the Constitution. She emphasized that the service will continue to uphold integrity and serve the nation diligently under the new leadership. The transition is expected to bring renewed focus on enhancing security and maintaining law and order across Kenya.
As Acting IG Kanja assumes leadership, the NPS looks forward to addressing challenges, improving community relations, and enhancing operational efficiency. The new leadership team’s immediate priorities include fostering a culture of accountability, addressing public concerns, and maintaining peace during critical periods.
The appointment of Douglas Kanja Kirocho as the Acting Inspector General marks a pivotal moment for the National Police Service. With a commitment to professionalism and effective leadership, the NPS aims to strengthen its role in safeguarding citizens and upholding justice across Kenya. As the service navigates these transitions, the focus remains on delivering security services that meet the expectations of all Kenyans.
