Poland’s Euro 2024 campaign, head coach Michal Probierz announced that star striker Robert Lewandowski will “probably” be fit to play in Poland’s second Group D match against Austria next week. Lewandowski, who suffered a thigh injury during a 2-1 friendly victory over Turkey on Monday, will miss Poland’s opening game against the Netherlands in Hamburg this Sunday.
Contrary to media speculation suggesting that Lewandowski might miss the entire group phase, Probierz remains optimistic about the Barcelona striker’s recovery. “I’m surprised when I read comments that it’s impossible when a muscle is torn. There are different degrees of such an injury,” Probierz stated during a press conference on Friday.
The coach emphasized the progress in Lewandowski’s treatment, crediting the medical staff for their diligent work. “There is progress in his treatment, the medical staff are doing everything to get him back on his feet,” he added. Lewandowski, Poland’s all-time leading scorer, is set to undertake individual training today, with physiotherapists closely monitoring his condition.
Probierz expressed his trust in the medical team, likening their expertise to that of a bus driver. “I don’t ask them about such things because I fully trust them. Just like I don’t tell a bus driver which way to go,” he remarked.
In other injury news, Verona forward Karol Swiderski, who sustained an ankle injury while celebrating his opening goal against Turkey, has already rejoined team training. This development further bolsters Poland’s attacking options ahead of their crucial fixtures.
Poland faces a challenging start to their Euro 2024 campaign. After their opening match against the Netherlands, they will take on Austria in Berlin on June 21. The group stage concludes with a high-stakes encounter against title favorites France on June 25.
As anticipation builds, the potential return of Lewandowski could be a game-changer for Poland. His presence on the field not only boosts the team’s morale but also significantly enhances their attacking prowess. Fans and teammates alike will be eagerly watching his recovery, hopeful that their star striker can lead Poland to success in the tournament.
