Laayoune, Morocco – Liberia has reiterated its unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, including over the Sahara region. This affirmation was made on Friday by Liberian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sara Beysolow Nyanti, during the third session of the Morocco-Liberia Joint Cooperation Commission held in Laayoune.
Speaking at a press briefing following discussions with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, Nyanti emphasized her country’s consistent stance on Morocco’s sovereignty over its entire territory. She reaffirmed Liberia’s endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy plan as the sole credible and realistic framework for resolving the regional dispute concerning the Sahara.
Nyanti commended the United Nations for its central role in pursuing a viable and lasting resolution to the Sahara issue, underscoring the organization’s exclusive mandate in this regard. She stressed the importance of realistic and pragmatic solutions, echoing international calls for stability and development in the region.
Morocco’s Foreign Minister Bourita expressed gratitude to Liberia for its steadfast support of Morocco’s territorial integrity, noting the historic ties between the two nations. He highlighted Liberia’s proactive engagement in supporting Morocco’s sovereignty, including significant diplomatic gestures such as the opening of the Liberian General Consulate in Dakhla in 2020.
“Liberia has consistently demonstrated its commitment to Morocco’s sovereignty through clear and practical measures,” Bourita said, referencing Liberia’s participation in the 2021 Ministerial Conference in Support of the Autonomy Initiative under Morocco’s sovereignty.
The autonomy plan, first proposed by Morocco in 2007, aims to grant the Sahara region self-governance under Moroccan sovereignty. It has received growing international support as a pragmatic solution to the decades-long dispute.
Liberia’s reaffirmation comes amidst heightened diplomatic efforts by Morocco to consolidate international backing for its autonomy plan. The Joint Cooperation Commission meeting in Laayoune also served to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries, with discussions focusing on economic cooperation, education, and capacity-building initiatives.
As regional stability remains a priority, Liberia’s clear stance aligns with broader African and international efforts to foster peace and development in the Sahara. The partnership between Liberia and Morocco underscores the importance of solidarity and cooperation in addressing pressing geopolitical issues within the continent.
