Kenya’s music scene is undergoing a revolution, with a new genre, Arbantone, capturing the attention of global listeners. Spotify’s 2024 report predicts that 2025 will be a breakthrough year for Arbantone artists, with Sean MMG, Lil Maina, and YBW Smith at the forefront of this movement.
Arbantone is quickly establishing itself as a distinctive blend of urban beats and traditional rhythms, much like its predecessors Genge, Gengetone, and Kapuka. However, it sets itself apart by tackling controversial topics that many Kenyans often shy away from. The genre’s ability to address such issues has resonated with younger audiences, particularly those from urban areas, and its influence continues to grow.
Sean MMG, a rising star in the Arbantone scene, made waves in 2024 as one of the standout performers at Nairobi’s Sol Fest. His song “Majuu”, featuring YBW Smith, has garnered significant attention, contributing to the genre’s rise. Meanwhile, rapper YBW Smith, known for his viral hit “Lele”, has been making music since 2018, experimenting with Gengetone, Reggaetone, and electronic dance, and adding to Arbantone’s widespread appeal.
Lil Maina, a key figure in the evolution of Arbantone, is recognized for his innovative approach, blending Genge-inspired urban sounds with Swahili, Sheng, and English lyrics. His music resonates with a younger generation and has earned him a loyal fan base. His unique style has positioned him as a trailblazer within the genre.
Spotify has been instrumental in amplifying the reach of Arbantone through curated playlists that showcase both emerging and established artists. With over 230,000 monthly listeners, Lil Maina leads the pack, followed by Sean MMG and YBW Smith, both of whom have carved out their own space within the genre.
As Spotify’s Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, puts it, “We’re thrilled to continue celebrating milestones and reinforcing our commitment to the growth of the music ecosystem across Africa.” With platforms like Spotify providing a global stage, Arbantone is poised for continued success in 2025 and beyond.
