Lionel Messi, regarded as one of the greatest footballers in history, was awarded the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom by U.S. President Joe Biden on Saturday. This honor, the highest civilian award in the United States, recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the U.S., global peace, or other important societal endeavors. Messi, a World Cup winner and eight-time Ballon d’Or recipient, made history as the first Argentine and the first male soccer player to receive the award.
However, despite this extraordinary recognition, Messi was notably absent from the ceremony held at the White House. Other notable recipients, including U2’s Bono, basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, attended the event, but Messi’s absence raised questions. According to Messi’s representatives, he was unable to attend due to a prior commitment. The statement, distributed by his club Inter Miami, clarified that Messi had informed the White House in advance. “Leo, through the club, sent a letter to the White House saying that he is deeply honored and that it is a profound privilege to receive this recognition, but that due to scheduling conflicts and prior commitments he was going to be unable to attend,” the statement read.
Despite his absence, the honor was granted for Messi’s incredible achievements both on and off the field. As the most decorated player in professional soccer history, Messi is known for his philanthropic efforts, particularly through the Leo Messi Foundation, which supports healthcare and education programs for children around the world. Furthermore, as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Messi has worked to improve the lives of children globally.
While Messi missed the ceremony, his contribution to soccer and global causes has earned him this well-deserved recognition, and it’s clear that his influence extends far beyond the football field.
