Police have arrested Martin Otieno, a suspect linked to a series of robberies targeting motorists along Nairobi’s Southern Bypass. The arrest followed intensified patrols by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Lang’ata, Dagoretti, and the Regional Criminal Investigations Office, responding to escalating security concerns in the area.
The suspect was apprehended after allegedly attempting to rob a family by placing a large stone on the road to force their vehicle to stop. According to a DCI statement, Otieno used the stone to obstruct traffic, creating a window for his assault.
“While on patrol, officers were alerted by a loud crash,” the statement read. “Rushing to the scene, they discovered that a Volkswagen, registration number KYW 690, had collided with the stone while traveling toward Ngong Road. The family inside recounted the horrifying ordeal: after hitting the obstacle, a man emerged from a nearby thicket and immediately confronted them, robbing them of their valuables.”
The quick response of patrolling officers led to Otieno’s arrest. Upon hearing the crash, they pursued the suspect into a nearby thicket, where he was apprehended. The stolen items were recovered, and Otieno was taken into custody.
Otieno is set to be arraigned in court on Monday, January 6, 2025. Authorities have assured the public of their unwavering commitment to maintaining security along the Southern Bypass. The DCI urged motorists to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities promptly.
This incident highlights ongoing efforts to combat crime in Nairobi, particularly in areas where motorists are vulnerable. Police patrols have been intensified in high-risk zones to deter such criminal activities and protect road users.
Motorists have been advised to drive cautiously and stay alert, especially at night, when criminal elements are more likely to operate. Residents expressed relief at the swift action by law enforcement, calling for sustained vigilance to ensure safety along the city’s key routes.
