A 46-year-old man tragically lost his life after being attacked by an elephant in Masinga, Machakos County. The deadly incident occurred on Tuesday morning in Kwakyumbo village, within Kyondoni, Kivaa Location. Authorities confirmed that the elephant, which had been spotted earlier in the morning by local residents, turned aggressive after an attempt to chase it away.
According to witnesses, the elephant was first seen by villagers who, in an effort to protect their homes and farms, attempted to drive the animal away. However, the elephant, likely startled by the people’s presence, quickly turned on the crowd. The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was struck by the animal and succumbed to his injuries almost immediately. The sudden and brutal attack sent shockwaves through the community, leaving the villagers in a state of disbelief and fear.
After the attack, the elephant moved further into Thaana Nzau Location in Mwingi, where it caused more distress. The elephant reportedly injured another man who was later discovered in a bush, his injuries indicating a violent encounter. Local authorities have not yet released detailed information on the condition of the second victim, but it is believed that he was rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
Following the incidents, officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) arrived at the scene to assess the situation and prevent further attacks. The KWS officers, based in the Mwea Game Reserve, are now working to track down the elephant and ensure the safety of local residents. Such attacks, although rare, highlight the increasing challenges of human-wildlife conflict in rural areas of Kenya, particularly in regions like Machakos County, which are near wildlife corridors.
