Manchester City commenced their Premier League title defence with a commanding 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Despite a disrupted pre-season, Pep Guardiola’s side showcased their trademark resilience and quality, securing all three points against a Chelsea side undergoing significant transition under new manager Enzo Maresca.
Goals from Erling Haaland and Mateo Kovacic were enough to seal the win for the reigning champions, who managed to overcome the absence of several key players. Guardiola opted to rest all four of City’s Euro 2024 finalists—Rodri, Kyle Walker, John Stones, and Phil Foden—giving them additional time to recover after their summer exertions. Nonetheless, the City manager was able to call upon the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias, and Manuel Akanji, who, despite their late return to training, played the full 90 minutes and demonstrated the depth and strength of City’s squad.
City’s performance was a testament to their consistency and ability to perform at the highest level, even under less-than-ideal circumstances. Speaking after the match, Guardiola praised his players for their commitment and attitude, especially given the limited preparation time. “I really didn’t expect it. I know what these guys can do, but the first day and lack of training,” Guardiola remarked. “We had two or three days to prepare, but we solved this lack of many things with our commitment.”
Chelsea, on the other hand, find themselves in a period of flux. Maresca, taking charge of his first Premier League match, faces the daunting task of molding a cohesive unit from a bloated squad of 43 players, including over 50 on the books when considering those out on loan. The Italian manager made several bold decisions ahead of the match, notably excluding Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell from the matchday squad, a move that caused some controversy. Sterling’s camp even released a statement expressing his dismay at being left out, highlighting the challenges Maresca faces in managing such a large and diverse group of players.
The game began with City asserting their dominance early on. Erling Haaland, one of the few City players who had a summer off from international duty, wasted no time in making an impact. In the 18th minute, a low cross from Jeremy Doku was deflected by Bernardo Silva into Haaland’s path, and the Norwegian striker coolly chipped the ball over Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to give City the lead.
Despite the early setback, Chelsea responded well and ended the first half on the front foot. The Blues had a golden opportunity to equalize when Ederson spilled a tame shot from Cole Palmer, but Nicolas Jackson was flagged offside before he could convert the rebound. It was a frustrating moment for Chelsea, who struggled to break down City’s disciplined defence.
Guardiola was forced to make an early substitution at halftime, bringing on Foden after Savinho was forced off due to injury on his Premier League debut. The second half was a more pedestrian affair, with the lack of pre-season minutes evident in the slower pace of the game.
Chelsea pressed for an equalizer, but their efforts left them vulnerable to City’s counter-attacks. Maresca’s side showed promise but lacked the clinical edge inside the box, as the new manager acknowledged post-match. “I think we competed very well for much of the game. We were similar if not better,” Maresca said. “The performance was there but we didn’t take the chances. Probably the big difference was inside the box.”
City eventually sealed the win with a second goal in the 88th minute. Kovacic, given too much space to burst through Chelsea’s midfield, unleashed a powerful shot towards the top corner. Although Sanchez managed to get a hand to it, the Chelsea goalkeeper could not prevent the ball from finding the back of the net.
The result underlines Manchester City’s status as the team to beat this season, while Chelsea face an uphill battle as Maresca works to integrate his new signings and build a cohesive squad. As the Premier League season progresses, both teams will look to build on this opening encounter, with City aiming for continued dominance and Chelsea seeking to establish themselves under new leadership.
