Mikel Arteta is optimistic that Gabriel Martinelli can step up and fill the void left by Bukayo Saka’s hamstring injury. Saka, who sustained the injury during Arsenal’s victory over Crystal Palace, is expected to be sidelined for several weeks. This absence will see him miss crucial fixtures, including the highly anticipated north London derby against Tottenham, the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Newcastle, and an FA Cup third-round tie with Manchester United.
Martinelli, who has primarily played on the left wing, switched flanks during the game at Palace and made an immediate impact by providing a goal and an assist. While his goal tally in the Premier League has dipped since scoring 15 in the 2022-23 season, Arteta believes the Brazilian forward is ready to embrace a more significant role in the team.
“Gaby thrives on challenges,” Arteta said. “He’s a player who enjoys responsibility and is eager to take on bigger roles. However, it’s not just about one player. Everyone in the squad needs to step up because we rely heavily on Bukayo, and his absence means the entire team must contribute more.”
Despite speculation about potential reinforcements in the January transfer window, Arteta has downplayed the likelihood of new signings. Gabriel Jesus’s recent resurgence, marked by five goals in two matches, has provided a timely boost to Arsenal’s attacking options. Additionally, with Raheem Sterling also sidelined due to a knee injury, Martinelli is expected to feature prominently when Arsenal host Ipswich in their next match.
Sterling, who joined Arsenal on loan from Chelsea to provide depth for Saka, is undergoing further assessments to determine the severity of his injury. In the meantime, opportunities may arise for Ethan Nwaneri, a promising 17-year-old forward. Nwaneri has yet to start a Premier League game but has made 10 substitute appearances this season, scoring three goals in the Carabao Cup. Arteta, however, remains cautious about rushing the young talent into a more prominent role.
“He’s made significant progress over the last year,” Arteta remarked about Nwaneri. “But there are still things he needs to understand. Every time he’s on the pitch, he makes a positive impact, which is an encouraging sign. He’s on a journey with us, and we’re mindful of managing his development carefully.”
With key players unavailable, Arsenal’s focus will be on collective effort and adaptability. Arteta’s confidence in his squad’s depth and Martinelli’s ability to shoulder more responsibility reflects his belief in the team’s resilience as they navigate this challenging period.
