Mary Wangari Wamae Retires from Equity Group Holdings Plc After Two Decades of Transformative Leadership

Mary Wangari Wamae, a prominent figure in Kenya’s banking industry, has retired from Equity Group Holdings Plc after a distinguished twenty-year career. Beginning in 2004 as Head of Legal, Wamae ascended through various pivotal roles, including Company Secretary, Head of Investor Relations, and Director of Strategy. Her tenure culminated in her appointment as the first-ever Group Executive Director in 2017, overseeing Equity Group’s regional subsidiaries and serving on multiple boards.

Throughout her career, Wamae garnered acclaim for her commitment to innovation and social impact initiatives. She received the 2021 Angaza Award for Women to Watch in Banking & Finance and was honored as the overall winner of the 2021 Women on Board Award. Additionally, she was recognized as the Private Sector Lawyer of the Year in 2023 for her legal advocacy spanning 33 years.
