The national resource-sharing debate has undergone a new phase following calls from Ruto’s allies in Ukambani to incorporate geographical area into the distribution matrix. Nimrod Mbai, Ruto’s representative in Kitui County and Kitui East MP, advocates for a shift from the “one man, one shilling, one vote” conversation initiated by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to a “One Man, One Shilling, One Kilometer” approach.
Mbai opposes the traditional “one man, one shilling” formula, proposing instead a system that considers both population density and geographical size. He argues that Kitui County, being vast and thinly populated, would suffer under the current framework advocated by the Mt. Kenya region. To address this disparity, Mbai suggests rallying support from other regions like North Eastern and Coastal counties to reject what he perceives as a divisive formula.
Emphasizing the need for inclusivity, Mbai asserts that a formula incorporating geographical area would benefit regions like Kitui, potentially doubling the funding allocated to its constituencies. His remarks came during a meeting with UDA grassroots leaders in Kitui, where he also announced his candidacy for the party’s Kitui county chairman position ahead of the upcoming party elections.
