The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has called on Kenyans to provide feedback on newly drafted guidelines aimed at integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other technological tools into journalism. MCK CEO David Omwoyo made the announcement on Monday, emphasizing the need for public participation in shaping policies that impact media practice in the country.
Omwoyo highlighted that the guidelines are designed to address the ethical and professional use of AI, data, and social media in journalism. He noted that these technologies are reshaping the media landscape, making it essential to adopt measures that uphold journalistic integrity and maintain public trust.
“The Council invites members of the public, stakeholders, and all interested parties to submit their views, comments, and recommendations on the draft guidelines. This will inform their review and ensure the guidelines reflect a wide range of perspectives and meet the needs of the industry,” said Omwoyo.
To guide this initiative, the MCK has developed four key documents:
- A Data Governance Guide for Media Practice in Kenya
- A Media Handbook for Reporting on Artificial Intelligence in Kenya
- A Media Guide on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Kenya
- A Guide on the Use of Social Media and the Internet for Media Practice in Kenya
These documents are available for public review on the Media Council’s website via the link: bit.ly/4hdoDVa.
Omwoyo underscored the constitutional mandate for public participation in policymaking, urging Kenyans to contribute to the discussion to ensure the guidelines are comprehensive and relevant. Written submissions are to be sent to the Council via email at Guidelines@mediacouncil.or.ke by January 26, 2025.
The initiative reflects the MCK’s proactive approach to addressing the rapid changes brought about by technological advancements. “These guidelines aim to support the media in navigating these technological advancements while safeguarding professionalism and ethics,” Omwoyo said.
As AI and data-driven tools continue to influence how news is gathered, processed, and disseminated, the Media Council’s guidelines are a significant step towards maintaining high standards in journalism while embracing innovation.
Omwoyo reaffirmed the MCK’s commitment to empowering journalists and media practitioners to balance the opportunities and challenges presented by emerging technologies. This initiative ensures that Kenyan journalism evolves responsibly, preserving the principles of accuracy, accountability, and public trust in the digital age.
