Where matatus honk and traders offer a mix of fresh produce and second-hand clothing, one man has carved out a unique niche in the lingerie market. Dan Nyalenda, a 36-year-old entrepreneur, is transforming the way people view the business of selling bras and lingerie in a market predominantly run by women.
Relocating from Kisii to Kericho in 2014 in search of better opportunities, Nyalenda began his mitumba business with just Sh3,000. Initially, his choice of selling bras, including push-ups, wireless, sports bras, and bralettes, raised eyebrows among his friends and neighbors. Many thought it was a woman’s job, but Nyalenda saw an untapped market and boldly pursued it.
Today, his small stall in the open-air market next to the Kericho central market has become a go-to destination for women seeking quality undergarments at affordable prices. With an average of Sh4,500 in daily sales, Nyalenda credits his success to hard work and his passion for helping customers find the perfect fit. His bras, priced between Sh50 and Sh100 depending on the quality, cater to a variety of needs. He not only provides these undergarments but also offers expert fitting advice, making sure his clients leave feeling confident and comfortable.
“I want my customers to have options. Selling bras is more than just business; it’s about making women feel confident,” Nyalenda said. His dedication to providing quality lingerie and personalized customer service has earned him a loyal clientele.
Though Nyalenda’s business is thriving, he dreams of expanding to a private boutique in the future, where women, especially older customers, can shop in a more comfortable and discreet setting. His current challenge is overcoming the reluctance some women feel when shopping in an open-air market.
As he continues to grow his business, Nyalenda encourages young people, especially those without formal jobs, to explore the mitumba trade, emphasizing that it offers financial independence and growth potential. His story is a testament to the rewards of taking risks and staying committed.
