Kenyan rapper Mejja, renowned for his impactful music, recently opened up about the personal struggles that shaped his journey. In a candid interview with Kameme TV, Mejja shared how his mother’s misdiagnosed brain tumor profoundly altered his life and career path, as well as his struggles with self-esteem growing up.
A Tumultuous Time
Mejja revealed that his initial aspirations were far from the music industry. “I wanted to be an archaeologist,” he disclosed. However, life took an unexpected turn when his mother fell ill with a brain tumor. The misdiagnosis lasted a year, during which time Mejja had to forgo higher education to care for her. “She lost her memory,” he said, reflecting on the emotional and logistical challenges his family faced. The situation was compounded by the loss of his grandmother, who had been a significant support system during this trying period.
Navigating Self-Esteem Issues
In addition to these family difficulties, Mejja faced his own battles with self-esteem. As a child, he struggled with weight issues that led to teasing and bullying. “I never had the courage to tell someone I could rap. I could never even approach ladies as I was always teased over my weight,” he admitted. It wasn’t until high school that Mejja began to build confidence and stand up to his body shamers. He found solace and a sense of belonging in playing basketball, which provided a reprieve from the bullying he experienced elsewhere.
Advocacy for Self-Acceptance
Reflecting on his experiences, Mejja believes that there is a pressing need for educational programs that foster self-acceptance and boost self-esteem. “There should be a subject that encourages people to accept themselves as they are, and how to boost their self-esteem,” he suggested. Such initiatives, he believes, could help individuals navigate social interactions more comfortably and build confidence.
Music as a Beacon
Despite the challenges he faced, Mejja’s resilience and self-discovery paved the way for his successful music career. His journey from personal hardship to becoming a celebrated musician stands as a testament to his strength and determination. Mejja’s story not only highlights his struggles but also underscores the importance of addressing mental health and self-esteem issues in educational and social settings.
In sharing his story, Mejja hopes to inspire others who may be facing similar challenges, proving that with perseverance and self-belief, it’s possible to overcome adversity and achieve one’s dreams.
