In a recent ruling, the Milimani High Court has sentenced Hillary Kipkorir Yego, a 36-year-old man, to 40 years in prison for the murder of Maxwell Gakure Kariuki, a fourth-year law student from Mount Kenya University. The tragic incident took place on June 28, 2017, along Limuru Road in Nairobi County. Kariuki, who was just 26 years old at the time, was brutally murdered, leaving a profound impact on his family and the community.
The prosecution, led by Counsel Mercy Njoroge, emphasized Yego’s lack of remorse throughout the trial and argued strongly for a severe sentence. The court also reviewed a pre-sentence report detailing the devastating effects of Kariuki’s death on his family. Kariuki’s mother is now bedridden due to the emotional trauma, and his father continues to suffer from the pain of losing his son.
Justice Ogembo, who presided over the case, took into account the significant impact on Kariuki’s family and the broader community’s demand for justice. Consequently, Yego was handed a 40-year imprisonment term, reflecting the severity of his crime and the need for accountability.
