The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development has announced an ambitious plan to plant 2 million trees in Makueni and Samburu Counties by the end of 2024. Principal Secretary for the State Department for Livestock Development, Jonathan Mueke, outlined the initiative, emphasizing the ministry’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
To achieve this goal, the ministry has designated two Thursdays each month for leading tree-planting activities in the targeted counties. These efforts will be concentrated in public institutions such as schools and forests. Mr. Mueke encouraged citizens to support this initiative, highlighting the critical role of community participation in combating climate change.
“This program will significantly benefit our country in terms of climate action, ensuring good rains, protecting our water towers, and promoting smart agriculture,” Mueke stated during a tree-planting event at Makongo Viewpoint in Makueni Sub-county. During the event, 10,000 tree seedlings were planted to honor those who lost their lives in recent floods.
In addition to the tree-planting initiative, Mr. Mueke announced the release of fertilizer to the National Cereals and Produce Board, urging farmers to collect it to boost agricultural production and enhance food security.
Nicolas Nzioka, the County Executive Committee Member for the Department of Lands, Urban Planning, and Environment, also spoke at the event, urging Makueni residents to plant at least 10 trees on their farms to contribute to environmental improvement.
