The Ministry of Health (MoH) has announced that it is closely monitoring reports of a flu-like illness allegedly linked to the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry reassured the public that HMPV is not a new virus and has long been documented as a contributor to respiratory illnesses in Kenya.
“The national public health surveillance system is on high alert, and we are happy to confirm that currently, there is no reported increase in the expected number of patients presenting with respiratory symptoms in our health facilities,” the Ministry stated.
HMPV, a known cause of respiratory infections, typically results in symptoms such as cough, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath, especially in children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems. However, the Ministry emphasized that current health data shows no unusual spike in cases, alleviating fears of an outbreak.
To safeguard public health, the Ministry urged Kenyans to remain vigilant and adhere to preventive measures, including regular handwashing and practicing respiratory hygiene. These guidelines form part of the government’s broader public health campaign, Epuka Uchafu, Afya Nyumbani, which aims to promote hygiene at both household and community levels.
“Any unusual cases of severe respiratory illness are advised to seek medical assistance from the nearest health facility as soon as possible,” the Ministry added, reiterating its commitment to protecting the health and safety of all citizens.
While flu-like illnesses can raise concerns, especially in the wake of global pandemics, MoH assured the public of its readiness to respond to any health threats. The Ministry remains committed to enhancing surveillance, ensuring early detection, and preventing potential outbreaks.
Kenyans are encouraged to stay informed and follow MoH updates. Maintaining simple public health practices, such as covering one’s mouth when coughing or sneezing and avoiding crowded places when feeling unwell, can help curb the spread of respiratory illnesses.
As the Ministry continues its monitoring, the public is urged to cooperate fully to ensure the nation remains healthy and prepared to face any emerging health challenges.
