In a recent case of Mombasa-based blogger Bruce John Khajira, also known as Chawa-001, has emerged with the arrest of one of the prime suspects in the horrific September 12 abduction and sodomy case. Omar Ali Mohamed, alias Nyanya, was apprehended on November 7, 2024, at the Lunga Lunga border while attempting to flee the country to Tanzania.
Mohamed, who had been on the run for weeks, is one of the main individuals implicated in the crime that shocked Mombasa. The victim, Khajira, alleges that he was abducted by a group of county officers from his home in Bamburi and subjected to brutal abuse. The blogger claims that the attackers demanded he accompany them to an unknown location to apologize for his critical stance against the Mombasa County Government. The incident escalated to a horrifying assault, including sodomy, before Khajira was dumped near the Mwakirunge dumpsite.
Mohamed’s capture marks the culmination of an intensive investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), in collaboration with the Immigration Department. Detectives had been monitoring Mohamed’s movements closely, aware that the masterminds behind the assault had planned to flee the country to avoid prosecution. Through tireless investigation, the DCI was able to pinpoint Mohamed’s involvement not only in the abduction but also in the sexual assault.
A key breakthrough in the investigation came from forensic evidence. Digital forensics experts at the DCI’s lab identified the Nissan Note car, with registration number KDQ 394C, which had been used to transport Khajira from his home to the scene of the crime. The vehicle was hired by Mohamed on August 20, 2024, and was returned on the evening of September 12 after the assault. The car was intercepted, and its movements were traced to the primary and secondary crime scenes. The vehicle was at the Mombasa County Government construction site in Bonje for nearly two hours, where Khajira was sexually assaulted. It was later driven to Mwakirunge, where the victim was abandoned.
The DCI has since identified several other individuals connected to the crime. Notably, four suspects Abdul Athman, Violet Adera, Esther Muthoni, and Haji Babu have already been charged in connection with the abduction and sodomy of Khajira. The suspects face serious charges, including conspiracy to commit a felony, abduction with intent to confine, gang rape, and assault with intent to cause bodily harm. The prosecution, led by Anthony Musyoka, opposed their bail application, citing concerns that the suspects posed a flight risk due to the serious nature of the crime.
During their court appearance before Senior Resident Magistrate Robert Mbogo, the accused denied all charges. The case has sparked outrage among residents of Mombasa and beyond, with many expressing shock at the alleged involvement of county officers in such a heinous act.
Khajira, known for his outspoken criticisms of local government activities, has since spoken out about the trauma he endured during the attack. The blogger alleges that his assailants targeted him specifically because of his vocal opposition to the Mombasa County Government. His abduction and subsequent assault have been condemned by human rights groups and political activists, who are calling for swift justice.
The ongoing investigation is expected to unearth more details as detectives continue their search for other perpetrators involved in this crime. With the arrest of Mohamed and the charges against the four suspects, there is hope that justice will be served for Khajira, and those responsible for the abduction and assault will face the full weight of the law.
As the case progresses, it highlights concerns about the abuse of power and the need for accountability, particularly within local government bodies. The public will be closely watching the legal proceedings to ensure that the truth comes to light and that justice is delivered for the victim.
