On January 7, 2023, the life of 13-year-old Karon Blake was tragically cut short when he was shot outside a home in Washington, D.C. The shooter, 42-year-old Jason Lewis, was sentenced to 12½ years in prison after being convicted of voluntary manslaughter, assault with a dangerous weapon, and firearm charges.
The incident occurred early in the morning when Lewis, a father and former city government employee, heard a noise outside his home. Grabbing his firearm, a black Smith and Wesson M&P .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol, he went to investigate. He spotted Karon by a white Kia Soul and, according to Lewis, called out to him. Karon, who was unarmed, ran toward him, and Lewis, fearing for his life, fired two shots. However, an investigation revealed that three bullet casings were found at the scene two from the shots fired at Karon and one aimed at the vehicle.
Karon’s last words, as he collapsed after being shot, were a desperate plea: “I’m a kid. I’m a kid.” His mother, Londen Blake, was left heartbroken by the loss of her son, whose life was tragically ended in a moment of misunderstanding and fear.
In his trial, Lewis testified that he believed Karon was armed and that he was acting in self-defense. He claimed to have seen a flash from the car and heard a bang, which led him to believe he was being shot at. However, no weapon was found on Karon, and his actions running toward the shooter suggested he was not a threat.
The case highlighted the devastating consequences of split-second decisions made in fear. Karon’s mother, in her grief, spoke of the immense pain of losing her son in such a violent and senseless way. She expressed the difficulty of accepting that her child, who had so much life ahead of him, was taken by someone who feared him without cause.
In his sentencing, Lewis apologized for his actions, expressing regret for the destruction he had caused. He reflected on his past work with young people and the opportunities he had hoped to provide them, acknowledging that everything he had worked for had been overshadowed by his tragic decision that night.
