Mount Kenya University (MKU) celebrated an impressive performance at the recently concluded East Africa University Games, hosted by Maseno University. The institution’s badminton and woodball ladies teams emerged as winners in their respective disciplines, underscoring MKU’s commitment to sports excellence.
In athletics, Viona Wangari, an 18-year-old Oral Health student, made headlines by clinching silver medals in both the 100m and 200m finals. Her stellar performance not only denied Ugandan athletes a clean sweep on the podium but also highlighted her potential as a future track star.
MKU athletes also demonstrated prowess in various disciplines, including taekwondo, karate, tennis, chess, darts, scrabble, table tennis, and volleyball. The university’s efforts culminated in a commendable 9th-place finish in the overall medal standings, with a haul of seven gold, five silver, and 14 bronze medals.
The competition brought together 38 universities from across East Africa, with Uganda’s Ndeje University emerging as the overall winner. Kenya’s USIU-Africa secured second place, while Uganda Christian University (UCU) finished third. Despite stiff competition and logistical challenges, MKU stood out for its resilience and determination.
William Luta, MKU’s sports coordinator, lauded the students’ efforts and adaptability, given the circumstances. “We had to work with who is available,” Luta said, referencing the conflict between the tournament schedule and academic exams. “Many players had to withdraw due to exams, but those who participated gave their all.”
The dedication of the athletes was evident, with some competing through injuries and emotional challenges. “It tells you the passion these players exhibit and the pride they have in representing their university,” Luta remarked. He also emphasized the need for future investments in sports, suggesting the introduction of sports-related scholarships to foster competitiveness.
The games served as a learning experience for MKU, reinforcing the importance of preparation and support for student-athletes. As the university reflects on its achievements, it also aims to implement strategies to enhance its performance in future tournaments.
MKU’s participation in the East Africa University Games showcased not only its athletic talent but also the indomitable spirit of its students. With continued support and investment in sports, the institution is poised to climb higher in regional rankings and inspire the next generation of champions.
