Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has called on Kenyan youth seeking employment opportunities abroad to maintain discipline and uphold the country’s good name as they embark on their international careers. Speaking during the opening of a Job Fair to mark the 60th anniversary of Kenya’s diplomatic journey, Mudavadi, who is also the Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary, stressed the importance of adhering to foreign laws and representing Kenya honorably in the Diaspora.
Mudavadi emphasized that Kenya has a strong global reputation, and the actions of its citizens abroad directly reflect the country’s values. He urged the youth to be mindful of their conduct and to understand that the laws of their host countries supersede any previous habits from home. “The moment you land in another country, their laws apply. If you are used to mischief in Kenya, it will not work abroad. Respect the law and represent Kenya with honor,” Mudavadi advised. He further noted that a disciplined and law-abiding Kenyan diaspora is crucial for strengthening the country’s image globally.
As part of the event, Mudavadi also warned against reckless behavior that could tarnish the image of the country. He explained that one of the key ways to maintain Kenya’s reputation on the global stage is by respecting the laws and customs of foreign nations. “Kenyans abroad must uphold discipline, abide by foreign laws, and protect Kenya’s global image,” he stated. The Cabinet Secretary underscored the significance of this approach in attracting foreign investors to Kenya, citing that investors are more inclined to invest in nations that respect the rule of law and maintain order.
Mudavadi also took the opportunity to address the importance of due diligence when engaging placement agencies for overseas jobs. He encouraged the youth to thoroughly vet any recruitment agencies they plan to work with to avoid exploitation and ensure a smooth transition to their new roles abroad. “Kuuliza si ujinga. Do your due diligence to ensure that the agency you are dealing with is credible before boarding the plane. This is the only way to protect yourselves and ensure a smooth transition abroad,” Mudavadi urged.
The week-long Job Fair, organized by the State Departments for Diaspora Affairs and Labour and Skilled Development, offers young Kenyans the opportunity to connect with reputable international employers. The fair is an initiative to help youth find employment opportunities while promoting Kenya as a disciplined and responsible nation. Mudavadi highlighted the importance of the diaspora, stating that their role extends beyond remittances, with opportunities for skills and technology transfer that can contribute to national development.
Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs Roseline Njogu also spoke at the event, emphasizing the need for proper regulation of placement agencies to ensure the safety and well-being of Kenyans working abroad. She pointed out that diaspora engagement is not limited to job placement but extends to skill-building and technological innovation, which can significantly impact Kenya’s economic growth. “The diaspora is not just about job opportunities. It involves skills transfer and bringing back technologies that can transform our industries,” said Njogu.
The Job Fair serves as a platform to engage Kenyans with credible employers, with a broader focus on fostering a productive and disciplined diaspora community. Njogu encouraged the youth to stay proactive, informed, and ready to seize the opportunities that come their way. “The future is yours to create. The event will culminate in a town hall meeting with President William Ruto on Monday as part of Jamhuri Day celebrations, reinforcing the government’s commitment to supporting the youth in finding employment opportunities both locally and abroad.
