Middle-aged man was beaten to death by a mob in Mburi village, Njukiini, Gichugu, Kirinyaga County, on Monday night. The man was suspected of murdering a local night watchman and disposing of his body in a classroom at Mburi Christian Primary School.
The incident, which unfolded around 11 p.m., began when the suspect allegedly confessed to local residents, under duress, about his involvement in the death of the 74-year-old watchman. According to Timothy Kariuki, the Njukiini MCA, the suspect’s admission led to an immediate and violent reaction from the villagers. Kariuki, who attempted to intervene, reported that his efforts to control the enraged crowd were unsuccessful.
“I tried to help him in vain,” said Kariuki. “The villagers were too angry, and it was impossible to prevent the lynching.”
The watchman’s body was discovered on Monday morning by students at the primary school. The body was found in a classroom, stripped of trousers, an act that has stirred significant distress among the local community. Mary Mwaniki, a teacher at the school, described the scene as “very sad,” highlighting the impact of the discovery on both the students and the school’s operations.
Residents voiced their frustration and fear over the rising crime in their area. Peter Kinyua, a local resident, expressed concerns about criminals targeting men for their possessions at night. “These criminals are undressing men and running away with their trousers to search for money in their pockets. They are harassing us,” Kinyua said.
The mob justice executed on the suspect reflects the broader issues of crime and law enforcement in the region. Community members are growing increasingly frustrated with the perceived ineffectiveness of the justice system, which they believe fails to adequately address or prevent criminal activities. Joseph Wanjohi, another local resident, echoed this sentiment, stating, “We have taken the law into our own hands because when criminals are arrested, they are often released by the courts.”
Gichugu Sub-County Police Commander Johnson Wachira confirmed the incident and urged the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. “It is crucial for the public to allow the legal system to handle such matters,” Wachira said, emphasizing the need for lawful and controlled responses to criminal acts.
The suspect’s remains were transported to the Kerugoya Hospital mortuary, where they will await further examination. The police have begun an investigation into both the murder of the watchman and the subsequent lynching of the suspect.
This incident has prompted a renewed call for increased security measures in Mburi and surrounding areas. The local community is demanding more effective intervention from security agencies to combat the rising tide of criminal activities and ensure justice is served through the proper legal channels.
As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, grappling with the dual tragedies of the watchman’s murder and the violent response to the suspect. The event underscores a pressing need for improved law enforcement and a more responsive justice system to address the concerns of residents and restore peace to the area.
