Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has acknowledged that some government officials have provided the youth with ample reasons to protest across the country. Speaking at a recent meeting held at the Kenya School of Government, Mudavadi highlighted the valid concerns raised by young people, stressing the urgent need to streamline governance moving forward.
Government’s Shortcomings and Youth Frustration
During his speech, Mudavadi stated, “They have called us out with a particularly strong message to the government that they are not feeling us. In some instances, we gave them the ammunition to fight us by showing them our opulence, corruption, and wrongful use of public resources.” His remarks underscored the youth’s frustration with the government’s excesses and insensitivity to the challenging economic times.
Mudavadi acknowledged that the youth-led revolt has exposed the government’s failure to address the emerging issues affecting young people and the majority of Kenyans. “They want to see a more inclusive government that is sensitive to the emerging issues affecting them and the majority of Kenyans,” he added.
Gen Z’s Demand for Accountability
The Prime Cabinet Secretary’s remarks come amidst a sustained youth-led clamour for change under the banner of Gen Z. This movement has vowed to continue holding the government accountable, with some groups even calling for the resignation of President William Ruto.
The youth’s demand for better management of the country’s affairs initially began as a rejection of the contentious Finance Bill 2024. The widespread protests ultimately led President Ruto to decline to sign the bill into law. Tens of thousands of youths took to the streets, resulting in tragic clashes with police forces.
Tragic Outcomes and International Condemnation
The demonstrations have been marred by severe police brutality, with more than 40 protesters killed and over 300 others injured. This has sparked widespread condemnation both locally and internationally, highlighting the need for a more humane and responsive approach to handling civil unrest.
Government’s Response: A Multi-Sectoral Convention
In response to the unrest and ongoing demands from the youth, President Ruto announced a six-day multi-sectoral convention set to kick off on Monday. This forum aims to bring together religious institutions, civil society, professional organizations, political parties, and other stakeholders to address the grievances and chart a path forward.
Moving Forward
The Prime Cabinet Secretary’s admission is a significant step towards acknowledging the deep-seated issues that have fueled the youth protests. As the government prepares for the upcoming convention, it remains to be seen whether these efforts will lead to meaningful reforms and restore trust among the youth and the broader Kenyan population.
The youth’s call for accountability and better governance serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of transparency, inclusivity, and responsiveness in addressing the needs and aspirations of all citizens.
