The Chief Executive Officer of the Music Copyright Society of Kenya, Dr. Ezekiel Mutua, has called on the youth to avoid digital violence and adopt peaceful approaches to achieving accountability from their leaders. Speaking during the Kenya Youth Parliamentarians Association’s Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Day, Mutua emphasized the need for constructive dialogue instead of confrontation, stressing that the future of Kenya hinges on non-violent solutions.
Themed “Protecting Freedom, Justice, and Democracy through the Spirit of Non-Violence,” the event gathered young leaders to reflect on their role in shaping a better Kenya. Mutua urged the youth to engage in more positive online interactions, highlighting the rising issue of digital hostility on social media platforms. He condemned both physical and digital violence, asserting that true progress and inclusivity can only be achieved through collaboration and respectful engagement.
“Progress does not come through hostility, whether physical or digital. We must embrace dialogue as the foundation for sustainable solutions,” Mutua stated, reinforcing the importance of maintaining peace in Kenya’s political climate.
The event provided a platform for Mutua to encourage young people to focus on Kenya’s accomplishments in democracy and resilience. He cautioned against excessive criticism of the country on international platforms, which he said could harm Kenya’s global reputation. Instead, he urged the youth to acknowledge the nation’s successes while constructively addressing its challenges.
Drawing inspiration from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of non-violence, Mutua emphasized values such as integrity, courage, and perseverance. He pointed to former President Mwai Kibaki’s journey to leadership as an example of resilience and determination in overcoming adversity.
Mutua also addressed the powerful role of social media in shaping the future. He urged youth to use digital platforms responsibly, advocating for content that educates, inspires, and uplifts others, rather than spreading hate or engaging in online trolling. “The internet is permanent, and your digital footprint will shape your future opportunities,” he warned.
The event was further complemented by a powerful speech from Nominated Senator Hezena Lemaletian, who spoke on the importance of self-presentation and intentional leadership. Lemaletian stressed the significance of maintaining dignity and professionalism, noting that how young leaders present themselves influences both public perception and future opportunities.
Mutua’s message resonates with the pressing need for a shift in the way the youth engage in both physical and digital spaces, promoting a future of unity and constructive collaboration.
