The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the tragic death of Nakuru-based human rights activist Richard Raymond Otieno, popularly known as “Molo President.” Otieno succumbed to injuries sustained during a brutal attack by unknown assailants on the night of January 19, 2025.
According to the DCI, Otieno, a respected voice in advocating for justice in Molo, was attacked outside his home gate at around 11 p.m. after spending the evening at Alpha’s Club in Elburgon town, enjoying a game of pool with friends. Reports indicate that he suffered severe head injuries in the attack. Despite being rushed to Elburgon Subcounty Hospital for emergency care, Otieno was pronounced dead upon arrival.
In a statement released on Saturday, the DCI provided an update on the ongoing investigations. On January 24, 2025, a team comprising the Homicide Unit, forensic experts, and key stakeholders conducted an autopsy at Kericho Referral Level 4 Hospital mortuary. Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor, assisted by Dr. Grace Midigo, led the procedure, with family representation by Dr. Ngurungu, a pathologist. Other stakeholders included representatives from the Kenya National Human Rights Commission (KNHRC), the Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU), and the Red Cross.
The autopsy revealed significant injuries, including two slash wounds on the occipital region, a stab wound on the upper forehead, swollen eyelids, abrasions on the chin and nose, extensive hemorrhaging, a fragmented skull fracture, and severe brain hemorrhage. Experts concluded that the cause of death was a severe head injury resulting from blunt and sharp force trauma.
Body samples were collected for further forensic, toxicological, and DNA analysis. The DCI indicated that several individuals of interest had been identified, and statements from witnesses were being recorded.
The DCI assured the public that the investigation is progressing steadily and pledged to uncover those responsible for Otieno’s death. “We are committed to conducting a thorough and professional investigation to ensure justice is served. We appeal to the public to remain patient and provide any information that could assist in solving this case,” the statement read.
Otieno’s untimely demise has sparked outrage and concern among human rights advocates and residents of Molo. As investigations continue, the community remains hopeful for justice for the activist who dedicated his life to fighting for the rights of the marginalized.
