The Nandi County Government has launched a cancer survivors support group, providing a platform for residents to share personal experiences and receive mutual support. Over 128 survivors gathered at Kapsabet County Referral Hospital for the launch, which aims to create a welcoming space for cancer patients and survivors to engage in community support. The group will offer moral and psychological support from peers and experienced individuals, fostering hope and persistence among members. Stella Birgen, a breast cancer survivor, emphasized the group’s role in offering crucial assistance, reflecting on her own journey through eight cycles of chemotherapy at Kapsabet Referral Hospital.
Jane Chepkoech, a cervical cancer survivor, called for financial support for cancer patients from the County Government, highlighting the high costs of treatment. Nandi Deputy Governor Dr. Yulita Mitei reaffirmed the County’s commitment to enhancing access to cancer screenings and treatments, encouraging residents to utilize the oncology center at Kapsabet County Referral Hospital. She emphasized the importance of community support, stating, “Together, we celebrate life, inspire hope, and reaffirm that no one has to face cancer alone.”
Nandi County Executive Committee Member for Health (CECM) Ruth Koech stressed that the cancer support group is essential for motivating and inspiring patients throughout their treatment journey. She noted that many patients previously arrived at the cancer center in advanced stages, underscoring the need for early detection and awareness. The CECM emphasized the importance of proactive steps against breast cancer, which is the leading type of cancer in the County, and reiterated the County’s dedication to offering the best clinical expertise and service excellence.
The support group will not only provide a safe space for survivors to share their experiences but also promote a sense of belonging and solidarity. By offering emotional support, practical advice, and a network of understanding peers, the group empowers survivors to navigate challenges with resilience and optimism.
