Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has strongly responded to critics who attacked him following his remarks during the burial of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula’s mother. Natembeya, who was targeted by several political leaders after addressing the gathering, maintained that he had simply spoken the truth, particularly on the issue of abductions, a subject that ignited a fierce debate.
The controversy began when Cotu Secretary-General Francis Atwoli claimed that some Kenyans were allegedly staging their own abductions to receive funding from civil society organizations. Natembeya, who works with various global organizations, vehemently disagreed with Atwoli’s assertion, stating that such remarks were unfortunate. He stressed that the abducted individuals should be set free, as their families were enduring immense suffering, not knowing the whereabouts of their loved ones.
In his response, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah hit back, suggesting that if Natembeya had knowledge of any abductions, he should report them to the police instead of publicly criticizing Atwoli. Ichung’wah also pointed out that Natembeya had served as a regional commissioner during the previous administration, which faced allegations of abductions and extrajudicial killings.
Natembeya, however, defended his record, highlighting that he had served diligently and without scandal. He emphasized that his decision to resign as Regional Commissioner was based on merit and integrity. Addressing the criticism, he said that his bold call for the government to put an end to abductions and release the victims was motivated by his commitment to justice.
“I will not be cowed or stopped. I will continue speaking boldly, without fear,” Natembeya declared. He called on his fellow leaders to stand firm in condemning extrajudicial abductions, as the public is looking for leaders who will advocate for the rule of law and the protection of human rights.
His comments reflect growing concerns over abductions in Kenya, with many citizens hoping for more decisive action from the government to address these violations.
