National Government Assumes Control of Bukhungu Stadium Renovations

In a development aimed at expediting the renovation of Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega, the national government has taken charge of the project from the county administration. This move, confirmed by Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, comes as a response to the financial difficulties faced by the county government, ensuring the timely completion of the stadium’s upgrade.

Originally, the national government had allocated Sh760 million for the renovation of Bukhungu Stadium. However, owing to financial constraints encountered by the county government of Kakamega, a revised funding model has been put in place. Namwamba underscored the urgency of the project, particularly in light of preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

“The county government has requested the national government to take over the project due to the financial challenges they are facing,” explained Namwamba. This transition of responsibilities necessitates a thorough review of various aspects of the project, including its design, contractual obligations, and timelines.

“This is a contract that was entered into by the previous county government of Kakamega. The current county government inherited this arrangement. Now, the national government has become an inheritor of an arrangement that had a number of issues that touch on design, nature of the contract, and targeted timelines,” clarified Namwamba.

To ensure a seamless transition and streamline the project, the national government has set new targets and timelines. The Sports CS affirmed the government’s commitment to fast-tracking the upgrade and addressing any inherited challenges promptly.

Namwamba’s announcement signifies a concerted effort by the national government to prioritize the completion of Bukhungu Stadium’s renovations, recognizing its significance not only for local sports but also for the broader national sporting landscape. With the revised funding model and enhanced oversight, stakeholders can anticipate swift progress in the redevelopment of this iconic sporting venue.
