Kenyan musician Kevin Bahati recently opened up about a rift with his sister that occurred after she accused his wife, Diana, of theft. During an interview on the Mic Cheque Podcast, Bahati shared insights into his strained relationship with his family, revealing the complexities that arose as his personal and professional life progressed.
Bahati explained that the fallout began when he started supporting children from a local children’s home, where he had grown up. His decision to adopt Morgan, a boy from the home, triggered tension within his family. Although Bahati wasn’t eligible to adopt Morgan at the time, he chose to keep him and raise him as his own. His family, however, didn’t understand his decision to support children who weren’t related to him by blood, which led to numerous disagreements.
The situation became even more complicated when Bahati started a serious relationship with Diana. He recalled an incident when he received a large sum of money after performing for the then-president of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta. He stored the money in a drawer at home, and soon after, he and Diana traveled for a performance. When they returned, the money was missing, and his sister sent him a prophet who accused Diana of stealing it.
Bahati was deeply hurt by the situation, feeling betrayed by his sister’s actions. He revealed that his sister’s actions went beyond merely accusing Diana of theft. She even involved a prophet in the matter, claiming that Diana had stolen the money. Bahati was shocked by how far his sister went to perpetuate this false narrative. He expressed that if he had been home that day, he might have believed the accusations, and this could have severely impacted his relationship with Diana.
The fallout became more significant as Bahati’s career continued to rise. His commitment to supporting children and his growing relationship with Diana seemed to distance him from his family, who struggled to understand his choices. Bahati admitted that he found it difficult to forgive his sister, particularly because she never took responsibility for her actions. To this day, his sister continues to hold onto the belief that Diana stole the money, which has made it harder for Bahati to reconcile with her.
Reflecting on the situation, Bahati expressed frustration over how his family perceived his success and his decisions to support children in need. He felt that his sister believed he should prioritize his family members first, which was a point of contention. Despite this, Bahati remains steadfast in his decisions and continues to support the children he has adopted, even as his relationship with his sister remains strained.
The situation highlights the complexities of family dynamics, particularly when personal choices and public success collide. Bahati’s openness about this fallout serves as a reminder of the challenges that come with balancing family expectations and personal values.
