Police are investigating an incident in which former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, known for scripting Echoes of War, was allegedly attacked at a club in Nakuru Town. Malala’s car was also vandalized during the incident.
The attack occurred on Friday night after Malala entered the club, where a deejay announced his presence. This sparked a reaction from some revelers, who began singing anti-government songs, causing tension. The situation escalated, leading to Malala being attacked and his Toyota Land Cruiser being damaged outside.
Malala, visibly shaken, was escorted out by his supporters. His vehicle was taken to Nakuru Central Police Station for further investigation. So far, no arrests have been made, and police are looking into the club’s management for further details. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.
Echoes of War, a play by Malala, focuses on Kenya’s governance and the 2024 youth-led anti-government protests. The play has been at the center of controversy, especially after it was disqualified from the Western Region Drama Festivals, though a High Court ruling reinstated it. Recent developments included Malala being blocked from accessing Kirobon Girls, and students from Butere Girls demanding his release following his arrest.
Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen emphasized that the government supports free speech and is not involved in censorship. He clarified that his criticism was directed at political activists’ involvement in education, not the play itself.
