NSDCC Urges Community Action to Curb Rising HIV Infections Among Kenyan Youth

The National Syndemic Diseases Control Council (NSDCC) is urging concerted action to combat rising HIV infections, particularly among young people, warning of the potential to escalate the country’s HIV burden. At a public forum in Kanyenyaini, NSDCC Chairman Geoffrey Gitu emphasized the community’s role in protecting youth from HIV, early pregnancies, and gender-based violence (GBV). Gitu stressed the importance of a multi-sectoral approach to educate and implement measures aimed at reducing new infections and addressing the interconnected challenges.

Carol Kinoti, NSDCC Head of County Support, echoed the call for parental involvement in educating children on safe sex practices and preventing teenage pregnancies. She highlighted the need for open conversations about sexuality to mitigate risks among youth. Meanwhile, representatives from the Ministry of Interior and National Administration emphasized the dangers of early sexual activity, urging parents to monitor children’s online activities and prevent exposure to harmful influences. They also advocated for rigorous prosecution of GBV offenders to protect victims and deter future incidents.
