Leaders from Nyanza have come under sharp criticism for failing to raise the issue of harassment faced by Kenyan fishermen during Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni’s recent visit to the region. This issue, which has long plagued fishermen on the waters of Lake Victoria, was notably absent from discussions during the visit, much to the disappointment of local residents.
Fredrick Okore, a resident of Usigu Sub-county, voiced his frustration, expressing that Museveni’s visit to the Piny Luo Festival should have been the perfect opportunity to address the security concerns that Kenyan fishermen face from Ugandan soldiers. Okore emphasized that for years, there have been reports of persistent harassment by Ugandan military personnel, but nothing has been done to resolve the situation.
Despite numerous attempts to find a lasting solution, including several trips to Uganda, the problem remains unresolved, with no tangible responses from authorities. Okore pointed out that while Ugandan nationals have free access to fish and trade on the Kenyan side of Lake Victoria, the same privileges are not extended to Kenyan fishermen who venture into Ugandan waters.
This disparity in treatment has created an atmosphere of tension and frustration among local fishermen, who feel their concerns have been ignored. Okore’s sentiments were shared by many others in the community, who are disheartened by the lack of action from their elected leaders. They argue that it is high time the issue was brought to the forefront, especially during such high-profile visits.
The failure of Nyanza leaders to raise the issue with President Museveni has led to accusations of complacency. Critics suggest that these leaders have been hesitant to confront the sensitive issue, possibly to avoid rocking the boat during official engagements. For the residents, this continued negligence is seen as a betrayal, as they look to their leaders to advocate for their safety and livelihoods.
As the situation persists, the calls for action grow louder. Local residents are urging leaders to take a firm stand and ensure that the harassment of Kenyan fishermen on Lake Victoria is brought to an end.
